Music
Birdland
Weather Report · 1977
I played this song in middle school jazz band; I was on the trombone and, since we didn't have a string bass, I got to solo start the piece off with the trademark bass riff.
Ever since, this song has lived rent-free in my head, the greatest of the great jazz classics.
I particularly love to play this song when I'm in a great mood, to put me in an even better mood and remember that life is good.
Jack Sparrow
Hans Zimmer · 2006
I love a good movie soundtrack, and while I recognize John Williams as the supreme composer, I actually tend to like Hans Zimmer a little bit better.
Zimmer's best soundtrack overall is Pirates 3, but this track from Pirates 2 is my favorite lone track.
We Belong
Pat Benatar · 1984
My brother turned me on to '80s Classic Rock in around 2012, and at the moment this is my favorite of the era.
I find it romantic while thinking about my own marriage, although ours isn't as tempestuous as Benetar's sounds.
Into the Fire
Douglas Sills & chorus · 1997
My favorite song from a musical. It gives me true courage.
Nearer My God To Thee
Vocal Point · 2013
Just inspiring a capella. The Latin chanting is beautiful.
The Plan
Dave Grusin · 1993
Some of the best jazz has a nice boogie beat, like blues.
I watched The Firm once ... fell asleep through much of it, sorry Tom Cruise, but when I was awake, I remember thinking several times that I had to look up the (Academy Award-winning) soundtrack by Dave Grusin.
Minas Tirith
Howard Shore · 2003
I've still never fallen in love with anything else Howard Shore has done, but he sure knocked it out of the park with The Lord of the Rings, especially the differnt themes for different cultures.
Miami 2017
Billy Joel · 1981
I grew up on Billy Joel with it being the music Dad played the most, and Billy's piano riffing makes Miami 2017 my favorite of the bunch.
Woke Up This Morning
Taylor Eigsti · 2006
Just love it.
Wunderkind
Alanis Morissette · 2006
Inspiring.
Black Beauty
Duke Ellington · 1928
My favorite song from Duke's enormous repertoire.
Duke Ellington is one of the two greatest composers from the USA—John Williams his only competition for the title. Amazingly, my love for this song was already sky-high before I married a black beauty.
Augie's Great Municipal Band and End Credits
John Williams · 1999
Duel of the Fates literally put me on the edge of my seat the first time I heard it, in spite of the slightly disappointing movie entrenched around it.
But the rest of this track is pure John Williams fire too.
Master of Tides
Lindsey Stirling · 2014
Violin in rock-ish or pop-ish music is cool, whether it's Lindsey Stirling or not.
Goluboy Vagon
Vladimir Shainski · 1971
The cutest Russian children's song that's become something of a folk classic.
Test Drive
John Powell · 2010
Another epic soundtrack that deserves to be on this list.
Celestial Soda Pop
Ray Lynch · 1984
Brings back peaceful memories of happy Sunday mornings growing up.
Books
The Chronicles of Prydain
This series gets the top spot on my list because not only is it one of my favorites, but it's criminally under-appreciated.
I've never grown out of children's literature; some of the best books are there. This series is rich in uncommon wisdom, character development, suspense, and glittering Welch mythology. The prose style is a little simplistic, but you can't have it all. The series has no sequelitis syndrome; it just gets better and better up to the end of the final book.
The Way of Kings
This one is famous these days among fantasy readers, but that doesn't change that it's my favorite novel for adults. Epic in every way.
The rest of the Stormlight Archive is great, but in my opinion it never again QUITE reached the heights of the first book.
Jesus the Christ
This book gave me an even better sense of Jesus Christ's personality and character than the canonical scriptures did, and for that I am eternally indebted to Elder Talmage.
Summer of the Monkeys
This children's book's climax still makes me cry every time. And appreciate my family that I grew up with even more.
I'll never forgive the author's more famous other novel, Where The Red Fern Grows, for being more famous when it's SO much less refined and engaging.
To Kill a Mockingbird
This is a classic that needs no introduction. It was my Grandaddy's favorite, and he was quite a literary man.
Movies
Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Peter Jackson · 2003
This is a classic that needs no introduction ... for now. We'll see how old I am when the younger generation just doesn't know it.
I was a big fan of the books in high school, a few years before the movies were revealed, and I was super nervous that they'd be a letdown like most movie adaptations of really good books. But they weren't! They even improved on the books in some ways!
Batman Begins
Christopher Nolan · 2005
Every time I re-watch this one, I'm re-impressed by it (and yes, I love it more than The Dark Knight). So good ... music, character devlopment, action. I don't think the MCU ever would have gotten going if it didn't have this as a giant to stand on the shoulders of.
Swiss Family Robinson
Ken Annakin · 1960
My favorite OLD film, and boy is it old.
It was my very favorite movie circa age 5, and I was astounded to realize in adulthood that it still holds up pretty well.
Mulan
Tony Bancroft & Barry Cook · 1998
My favorite Disney classic, by a long shot.
Games
(besides my own games, of course—naturally those are favorites)
StarCraft: Brood War
In my freshman college dorm, I had a friend who was near-pro level at Brood War. I was in awe that year of the game's design and near-perfect asymmetric balance.
Pandemic
I got so good at the base game with two of my friends in San Diego that we could play on Hard Mode WITHOUT TALKING to each other (but seeing each other's cards) and have a decent chance of winning.
Hearthstone
The only video game I've played extensively in the last 11 years, and the one I've played to become competent in the TCG genre for my own game design goals.
I have many great memories of Hearthstone decks throughout its history. I generally play off-meta decks of my own formulation. I've hit Legend ~6 times with Shaman, twice with Mage, once each with Paladin, Rogue, Demon Hunter, Death Knight.
I'm currently on a long break from Hearthstone after being bored by its current metagame. We'll see if I come back to it again.
Commander Keen 4
A childhood classic I remember with fondness due to long hours of cooperating with my friend Josh Burton to discover all the secrets it had to offer.
Foods
Thai Food
My favorite restaurant is Pique Thai in Highland, Utah, although it was even better a few months ago when it was super cheap before they raised their prices to match their taste. Almost everything is fabulous on their menu, but my all-time go-to is the pineapple curry, with beef, with brown rice.
Massaman curries, pineapple fried rice, salmon yellow curries, mango-and-sticky-rice desserts, tamarind chicken with onions and cashews ... mmmmmmmm. Not just Pique Thai, either; I've tried a lot of Thai places and at least half are great.
Italian Food
Many Italian pastas are delicious, but it's really hard for them to beat a good pizza.
I'll not even mention gelato, lest I go on about it ... whoops.
If you give me the choice of a pizza, outside some non-chain places here and there, I'll choose a Papa John's pizza with garlic parmesan crust, pepperoni, pineapple, olives, and spinach.
